    Quantification of plausibility cross-checks in safety related control system architecture design for automotive applications

    When designing safety critical systems for automotive applications it is imperative that the chosen architecture can fulfil the designated safety goals. One significant aspect of this is proving architectural metrics are satisfied. The method developed in this thesis demonstrates, very early in the design process, that a system architecture can be systematically described and analysed to show that the final architectural metric targets for functional safety will be met. The system architecture model proposed can be used to explain a very complex system to other engineers / managers in an easily understood concept diagram, specifically tailored to examine the achievable diagnostic coverage of potential failures in the electrical /electronic system. Once the first architectural model is established, the method analyses architectural metrics in a quantified way, identifies potential weak areas and guides the designer towards additional Plausibility Cross-checks, or, in some cases, completely different architectures to improve the architectural metrics. The metrics can be calculated very quickly in comparison to the level of detail required for the final design. This permits quantified analysis of each candidate architecture allowing an informed decision to be made on which architecture to take through to the final design process. Often, multiple solutions will meet functional requirements, however, only a subset will meet functional safety requirements. The necessity to build safety into products has always been an important aspect of overall system design. This method allows decisions based on justifiable data, early in a project timeline to influence design decisions and ensure that concepts are correct. As demonstrated through examples this is achieved with a high level of confidence

    Flakeboard or particle board panels and other composite articles made from wood flakes or other particulate lignocellulosic materials having a relatively high internal bond and improved resistance to moisture are made from flakes or particles which have a moisture content of at least 15%. A catalyst capable of accelerating the reaction between the flakes or particles, the binder and water is applied to the flakes or particles prior to the addition of a moisture-tolerant particle board binder, such as an organic polyisocyanate.     Experimental Combat-Stress Model in Rats: Histological Examination of Effects of Amelogenesis-A Possible Measure of Diminished Vagal Tone Episodes

    Developmental defects of enamel-stress histomarker rings (accentuated striae) may be a potential measure of diminished vagal tone in research on extreme stress such as exposure to combat. To develop an animal model of this measure, we examined the enamel of rat incisors which erupt continuously. We examined incisors from 15 stressed-colony rats and 7 control-rats for these histomarkers using the Visible Burrow System (VBS). VBS was developed to study combat stress in rats. No stress rings were found in any of the rat incisors examined. In contrast to humans, rats have likely evolved to prioritize incisor strength during combat stress. Studies of amelogenesis during combat stress in other rodents with continuously growing incisors are warranted. Laboratory animals such as rabbits or marmosets may be especially suitable, since they less frequently use their incisors for self defense

    Towards a theory for Operational Excellence

    The term Operational Excellence is widely applied to businesses but the meaning is ill-defined and is often used as a desired goal. This paper provides a comprehensive review of Operational Excellence and starts to address the criticism of its lack of theoretical foundation. The aim of this conceptual paper is to clarify the meaning of Operational Excellent and to identify the underpinning theories and laws, or rules that guide it. Based on the synthesis of the literature using the term 'Operational Excellence' writings are reviewed against five criteria for a good theory. Our findings show there has been considerable research into identifying common practices and regularities of Operational Excellence but currently there is no single underlying theory of Operational Excellence that meets the criteria for a good theory. From our analysis of the literature we provide some recommendations to address the gaps found. Further research is required to develop a more robust theory of Operational Excellence that will serve to facilitate learning and innovation in next generation management thinking. Future study is also required to identify research that has been carried out that has tested the laws identified in this study. Ideas and input from practitioners would also be required to develop the theory and underpinning laws

    Introduction and spread of non-native parasites with Silurus glanis L. (Teleostei: Siluridae) in UK fisheries

    Despite growing concern of the ecological risks posed by the European catfish Siluris glanis L. in freshwater fisheries, little information exists on the parasite fauna of this silurid catfish in Britain. Parasitological examinations of released S. glanis from four still-water fisheries in England revealed the presence of Thaparocleidus vistulensis (Siwak, 1932) and Ergasilus sieboldi (Nordmann, 1832), both non-native parasites, the latter known to be an important fish pathogen. This represents the first record of T. vistulensis from British freshwater fish. The human-assisted movement of S. glanis between UK recreational still-water fisheries provides a clear avenue for the introduction and spread of non-native parasites
